A number of good and bad things are associated with running your own small business, which one discovers from hard experiences over the time and if we don't look at them seriously with a professional attitude we are likely to run out of business after some time. Five such negative sides of running your own business setup are discussed in this articles, we must look at them with a positive mindset and learn from the experience and mistakes of others instead of learning from our own mistakes.
Before we discuss the bad side to running your own company, it's worth remembering the many good reasons for having your own business. If you are starting now, in a few years from now you can be relaxing in a luxury yacht, sipping champagne. Ok so that is an extreme example- but why not? A good business can bring rich rewards and a lifestyle your friends will envy. Company formations aren't all hard work!
The biggest risk with running a company is financially. Significant debt can be accumulated through mis-management of your finances. There are several common causes for this situation. The first is in overpaying your suppliers. You must as a business owner, negotiate the very best rates. Alternatively you can employ someone who is skilled at negotiating good rates. On the subject of employees, try not to overpay, as a big wage bill can cripple you. This is what I have learn't with all my UK company formations.
The entrepreneur in us, is far more prominant in some people who are able to do very little and earn very much. However, there aren't many people like this. Most business owners are very hands from start to finish. My advice is to try and get as near to running the business without you as you can. If you end up permanently working more hours than you would in a nine to five job, then either you haven't planned the business properly, or you have picked the wrong product or service to sell.
The vast majority of normal people find difficult customers hard to stomach. There isn't much fun to be had to be shouted at by someone in the wrong. All this time, you need to remain focus and professional. You either need to grow a very thick skin quickly, or find someone else to do customer service for you.
If you run a business, be prepared for plenty of red-tape and bureaucracy. You need to remember everything from putting up no smoking signs (even if neither you, or any of your employees smokes). The many rules and regulations associated with running a company can really get in the way of actually making money and providing a good service.
Running a business will sap all the energy out of you. Firstly in terms of how much work is involved in setting up the brand, website and systems. Then there is the financial drain. Unless you have a service that costs nothing but time to provide, you will need to invest your own money in the business or borrow from the bank. With this, you run the risk of losing everything.
Please don't let me put you off though. We have listed 5 pitfalls, but even that was a struggle. Finding any more negative factors would be hard. The rewards can be massive, and you can mould your business around your life. If company formations is your thing, then why not go ahead and take the plunge?
